Climate Change Adaptation Master Classes

PIARN provides a gateway to climate change adaptation research in primary industries, improving coordination, development and accessibility of climate change adaptation research in the sector. PIARN engaged Seftons to coordinate its Master Classes for handpicked professionals and early career researchers to broaden their understanding of climate change adaptation.

We worked with PIARN to develop the Master Class program, identify workshop and field trip locations and inspirational speakers, advertise for and select participants, manage the event logistics and run a media campaign to achieve local, state and metropolitan media coverage. We planned for extensive participant-to-participant and participant-to-expert networking and fostered these networks beyond the live-in modules through webinars, and social media. The Master Classes gained strong media coverage, including Southern Cross Ten News, ABC Eyre Peninsula, ABC North Queensland, ABC Rural Radio, The Canberra Times and The Stock Journal (which sent a journalist to join the group for a day).

Participant Survey, PIARN Masterclass
logo-nccarf The PIARN Masterclass has been one of the best professional experiences I have had. I gained and experienced so much from it – technically and personally. The calibre of the participants, speakers and organisation (support from Sefton’s and active involvement from the PIARN team) was exceptional – we were pushed in rising to the challenge and participating.

Participant Survey, PIARN Masterclass
The Canberra master class session, with its focus on climate change adaptation policy, was an exceptional professional development experience for me. The exposure to leading edge research into on-farm adaptation strategies for cropping, grazing and forestry was also of great value to my position as a policy advisor for the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association.

Participant Survey, PIARN Masterclass
I interact with farmers on many levels – the master class gave me a clearer insight into what is impacting the adaptive capacity of farmers. This then helps with building sound extension frameworks to report results from agronomic trials with implications for adaptation to climate change.
